Each year, we eagerly anticipate the holidays, but somehow we always find ourselves struggling through them. Below are some suggestions on how to approach the holiday season with a focus on inner peace and self-care.
First set boundaries! I cannot emphasize enough the significance of boundaries. Setting boundaries is not self-centered or unfavorable; rather, it is what establishes a healthy separation between your limits and those of others. It's okay to say no or limit your time at events that feel overwhelming. Prioritize your needs, and don’t feel guilty for protecting your well-being. If you find it difficult to set boundaries, a book I highly recommended to clients is "Set Boundaries. Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself" by Nedra Glover Tawwab. Second, practice mindfulness. I notice people get frusterated with this one due to its simplicity and what may seem like dismissive response. However, mindfulness is so important to keep yourself regulated, to know what youre feeling in your body and to know when you are overwheled and when you may need a break. Mindfulness helps you stay present and calm, reducing anxiety and reactivity. Thirdly, remember to practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with kindness during the holiday season, as it can evoke various emotions that are completely normal to feel. It's important to acknowledge that you don't have to strive for perfection and that moments of vulnerability are acceptable. Recognize your own humanity and embrace all emotions as valid. Each person's holiday experience is unique, so avoid comparing yourself to others and be mindful of the expectations you hold for yourself and those around you. Consider carrying mindful affirmation cards with you, whether in your car or purse, to serve as gentle reminders on how to be kind and compassionate towards yourself. By following these suggestions, you can maintain a sense of balance and fully appreciate the holiday season while still prioritizing your own well-being. Establishing boundaries can assist in feeling more empowered in your surroundings and creating room for self-care. Practicing mindfulness enables you to recognize when you are becoming overwhelmed and agitated, giving you the ability to breathe and soothe your nervous system. Additionally, cultivating self-compassion helps you navigate challenging interactions or circumstances with patience, granting yourself the freedom to err, acknowledge your emotions, and embrace your humanity.
